Dear Parents and/or Guardians,
During the next several weeks, your child will be learning about the importance of Internet safety and cyberbullying prevention as part of the elementary library curriculum. We live in a time when the Internet provides access to vast amounts of information and opportunities to be part of a global community. Consequently, the Wilson School District feels it is important to teach students both the skills to use the Internet effectively as well as strategies for keeping themselves safe while online.
During this unit of study I will be teaching students how to use the Internet safely, as well as how to use etiquette in online interactions (also called “netiquette”). Cyberbullying and how to prevent and respond to it will also be addressed. In addition to class instruction, the Internet safety unit will also provide opportunities for discussion in school and at home.
I would like to invite you, as partners in your child’s education, to discuss these topics with your child at home. Fourth and fifth grade students received the "Heads Up: Stop. Think. Connect." booklet, which is published by the Federal Trade Commission. It is provided by the Government Printing Office free of charge, and I hope it will help you to feel more comfortable when talking to your child about his or her online behavior and habits. Some topics in the “Heads Up” booklet may not be age-appropriate for your child at this time, so use your own judgment when selecting which topics to discuss.
