Earlier this summer, the Associated Press announced that it would no longer refer to the Islamist militants who had taken over swaths of of Syria and Iraq as ISIS (the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria) and instead would call them ISIL (the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant).
The Islamic State, also known as the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS), or the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL), is the successor Sunni militant group that emanated from Al Qaeda in Iraq, the insurgent organization led by Abu Musab al-Zarqawi that wreaked havoc in Iraq while U.S. troops were still deployed there.
British Prime Minister says "we are in midst of a generational struggle against a poisonous extremist ideology. We should not delude ourselves that the battle against Islamist extremism will be won once Isil has been rolled back in Iraq and Syria. "
The genesis of this jihadist group can be traced back to 2011. Similar to many other countries in the area, Syria was experiencing what is now being collectively called "Arab Spring" - A series of revolutions that began in the North African country of Tunisia and spread to the neighboring countries of Egypt, Algeria, Yemen and many others.
The article provides information on the terrorist group Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) and mentions the living conditions of people under ISIS control, ISIS violence against Muslims, and global efforts to fight ISIS
The author comments on the possible ways to completely destroy the extremist group ISIS despite the efforts of the U.S. and allies to drive much of them from Syria and Iraq.
